Welcome to the web space for year 7 Creative and Dramatic Arts 1, for 2007.
During term 1 2007 the students have been learning about the basics of music. We began with an exploration of “What is Music?” and “What is Sound?” to discover how composers use the qualities of sound to create pieces of music. These qualities of sound are:
Pitch – the highness or lowness of a sound
Duration – the length of a sound
Dynamics – the loudness of a sound
Tone Colour – the unique qualities each sound has
Texture – the layering of sounds. Vertical arrangement
Structure – the horizontal arrangement of musical ideas into a piece of music.
After listening to two pieces of music featuring non-traditional instruments (the Typewriter Song and the 1812 Overture), students began to create their own graphic representations of sounds they had created. Each sound had to be “drawn” in a box representing a duration of 5 second. The vertical axis represented the pitch, the horozontal axis represented the duration and the area of the box represented the dynamics or volume.
These sounds were then arranged into a composition that was to be performed in groups of 2 or 3. The performances and scores are given below.
